To obtain licensing in Canada, foreign trained veterinarians must follow the processes outlined by the CVMA (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association) and the NEB (National Examining Board). For more detailed information, visi the CVMA website at www.canadianveterinarians.net.
There are a number of steps to the process of becoming licensed as outlined below. It is important to note that if a veterinarian has graduated from an accredited veterinary institution (see the CVMA website for a list of accredited institutions), they must only complete the NAVLE to receive their CQ. If the veterinarian has graduated from a non-accredited institution, all three steps below must be completed in order to obtain the CQ.
- Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE)
- Clinical Proficiency Exam (CPE)
- North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE)
Once the above exams are completed and passed, the CVMA will grant the veterinarian a Certificate of Qualification (CQ). Once the veterinarian has the CQ, he/she can then apply for licensure to the specific provincial licensing body in the province in which they wish to practice.
- Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA)
- British Columbia Veterinary Medical Association (BCVMA)
- Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA)/College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO – www.cvo.org)
